Prologue

The tangled web of our universe cannot solely be defined by the billions of entities residing in the orbiting clusters of gas and rock. There are monarchs, entire bloodlines of spatial entities residing within every planetary body, that have watched over mankind since the dawn of time.  Our solar system is no different.  Over four and a half billion years ago, a child was born from the lonely crystals at the far edge of High Queen Helios' rule. At first, their small, translucent body faded in and out of existence drifting through the absent dark of space, but only took shape when Helios brought them and three others closer to her orbit; she gave each a name in hopes that one day they might guard the outer edges of her kingdom.  The first was Jupiter, King of the Lunar Giants, meant to rule at her side when the age came for him to become a star. Next, Saturn, Queen of Grace, so ethereal in beauty that light bent slightly in her presence as if unwilling to leave her.  Then there was Uranus, Archduke of the Awakening, ancient-eyed from his first breath though a little stilted in his own unique way. And last, the smallest — the one who had spent the longest wandering unnamed — Neptune, Prince of Dreams.  He was the only one who wept when she named him.

I. Ever Observant, Prince of Dreams

Prince Neptune has never found any interest in being a part of the traditional monarchy like High Queen Helios paved for him to be; he simply wishes to observe.  He’s understood most by the aquatic children on his home planet, and the moons who guard him with their life, in the way one may understand a dream upon awakening: not in its particulars, but in the emotional residue it leaves behind. He does not hold court, and never issues decrees.  Neptune’s born purpose is to be the embodiment of dreams. Most don’t know this, but every creature that sleeps sends something outward when it dreams. These half-formed desires, horrors, and memories drift through the dark to a point in the cosmos where Neptune collects, absorbs, and ultimately fulfills them.  He is, by now, impossibly full with carrying dreams within his core to the point he has no more room for his own desires. This is why he is small, and in the halls of the grand Celestial Court, this very trait is considered a flaw. To wear feeling so openly and be so thoroughly permeable to the interior lives of others is seen as a softness that has no place among royalty.  The Court has never known what to do with a prince who grieves openly, who receives the joys and horrors of a billion sleeping minds and carries them wherever he goes. Neptune has long since stopped trying to explain that what they call a curse, he calls a gift.  To grant someone a dream is the closest thing he knows to grace. It is, perhaps, the only thing he has ever been certain of.
